Rutgers Commit Marquis Lucas
Late Thursday night, Marquis Lucas reached out to StateOfRutgers.com to tell us that he has officially committed to the Scarlet Knights.
"I just wanted to tell you that I committed to Rutgers," Lucas told a member of the StateOfRutgers.com family. "I told you I would tell you first, so that's why I am calling so late."
The 6-foot-4, 293-pounder was a Rutgers camp standout and selected the Scarlet Knights over offers from Florida Atlantic, Illinois, Minnesota, South Florida and UCF.
Although he had only accumulated a handful of offers so far, many believe that he is a 20-offer caliber performer, who would eventually have accrued additional tenders.
As SOR previously reported, the talented big man had told the Rutgers staff that he "would be attending Rutgers" while at camp, but was advised to go home and sleep on his decision by his coaches.
"I really talked it over in-depth with my dad and my two high school coaches and found that it was the right thing to do, and the right time to do it. That put the icing on the cake, so I just called up the coaches to confirm it."
So who exactly did Lucas reach out to first?
"Coach Fleck, I called him around 10:30 p.m. and told him I was ready to become a Scarlet Knight. He is so full of energy, he was excited and saying a whole bunch of funny things.
"Then I talked to Coach Schiano for about 10 minutes. He was excited too and told me that he would take care of me when I get out there, I thought that was nice," Lucas continued.
Lucas had a message for all the Rutgers fans in the land.
"I hope to be a great player for you guys," he said. "Since I am going to work hard, I know I'll get there. I'm just gonna keep choppin'."
Lucas is the 10th overall commitment and first offensive lineman to join the Rutgers class of 2011.
